I only just yesterday saw one of these carbs - one choke, two barrels - or a one into two barrel carb. I guess because Chryslers are not my thing I had never seen one before.

Maybe a single choke to make idle tuning easier, but two barrels to yield a better distribution of fuel over the intake manifold. (This is based on my very limited grasp of carbs, so I might be very wrong)

Carter BBD.
Small carburetor venturis improve low-rpm drivability and throttle response because they maintain high air velocity through the venturis even at low engine speed. This ensures good fuel-air mixing and response. The downside is they obviously have poor peak airflow, but if you’re just running a low-ish hp 6 or 8 cylinder they’re fine.
It’s also what led to spread bore carburetors like the Carter Thermoquad and Rochester Quadrajet. The primary venturis were relatively tiny for good around town drivability, but when you hit the gas the big ass secondary bores would open up to give you the full 750 or 800 com of airflow when it was needed.

Feeling the secondaries open up on a Rochester in a big block Pontiac is something I will never forget.

It’s like flipping a switch. Instantly goes from mild-mannered to HOLY-SHIT THIS THING IS GOING TO KILL ME!

So what does BBD stand for? Carter purchased one of their competitors and some of their their products survived for very long time in production. Carter didn’t bother the rename these.
BBD = Ball & Ball Double-throat
My Dodge has one of these. I did get a spare one that came with car. I tried combining their best parts to get a good running one. The exact model seems to be fairly rare one with integrated automatic choke. The choke isn’t heated with electricity but small amount of intake air is routed through the exhaust manifold to the choke.
The engine runs now fine but only if it starts. It really doesn’t want to start but I think my ignition is the main culprit.
